My Materials Shopping List!

I often get asked what materials I use, so I have complied this list to make getting into pencils easier!

Faber-Castell Polychromos The go to pencil for artists starting out! Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils have an oil-based lead, which provides a medium-hard texture that allows for precise control and a smooth laydown. Their harder consistency makes detailed work and intricate drawing more achievable without compromising on colour vibrancy. Priced in the mid to high range, I consider them a worthy investment for artists wanting high-quality materials. Polychromos pencils excel in compatibility, working seamlessly with other oil-based and wax-based pencils, making them a versatile choice for starting your collection!

Caran D’Ache Luminance Caran D’Ache Luminance pencils have a wax-based composition, offering a rich and creamy laydown that facilitates excellent blending and layering. These pencils are among the top-tier in price due to their unparalleled pigment quality and high lightfastness ratings, which ensure the longevity of artwork. Their soft texture makes them ideal for creating vibrant and smooth gradients, and they blend effortlessly with both wax and oil-based pencils. Artists appreciate their luxurious feel and the depth they add to their pieces.

Caran D’Ache Pablo Caran D’Ache Pablo pencils feature an oil-based core, making them medium-hard compared to their Luminance counterparts. This texture enhances their suitability for detailed work, allowing for precise lines and controlled application. Priced in the mid to high range, Pablo pencils are a favorite among artists who seek the flexibility of oil-based pencils. They are particularly effective when combined with Luminance pencils, despite their different base compositions, and they mix well with other oil-based brands for diverse artistic effects.

Prismacolor Premier Prismacolor Premier pencils are renowned for their wax-based, exceptionally soft lead, which allows for supreme blending and layering capabilities. Offered at a mid-range price, they are recognised for their value and accessibility to artists of various skill levels. These pencils blend well with other wax-based brands, making them ideal for gradient creations. However, their softness can be less effective alongside harder pencils, as they can deposit heavily and may smudge when not handled carefully.

Derwent Lightfast Derwent Lightfast pencils stand out with their oil-based composition, offering a surprisingly soft laydown for an oil-based pencil. Their formulation aims at providing high pigment visuals with superior lightfast ratings, ensuring artwork longevity and integrity. Being on the higher end of the price spectrum, Lightfast pencils are preferred by professionals who prioritise permanence and blendability. Their ability to layer and mix with other oil-based pencils makes them a desirable choice for seamless transitions and dynamic colour effects.

Derwent Coloursoft Derwent Coloursoft pencils have a wax-based lead, which provides a soft touch perfect for a smooth and easy application of colour. Mid-range in price, these pencils are valued for their vibrant colours and blendability within the wax-based category. While they mix effectively with other wax pencils, their softness might present challenges if layered over harder, oil-based brands. However, they remain a popular choice for those seeking bold colour strokes and extensive blending capabilities.
